  • Steve Morse One Step Web Site: Use Steve Morse's brilliant site to more easily help search for many records, including Ellis Island ship manifests. Many tools are included.
  • The Statue of Liberty - The Ellis Island Foundation: Search for original and typed ship manifests. Page through those lists also.
  • Ancestry: The World's Largest online family history resource.
  • The New York Public Library: The New York Public Library (NYPL) is digitizing all of the 1940 New York City  telephone directories.  They have them available on their website.
  • Fold3: Find military documents.
  • LDS Family History Search: Free Family History, Family Tree, Genealogy Records and Resources from Around the World from the Mormon Church. The genealogy web site of the LDS Church. Search the index for records you can use.
  • Fast Film: A computer science student at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah has developed a free program that allows a person to automatically download batches of digitized microfilm images from
    FamilySearch.org to his or her hard drive.

  • United Stated Holocaust Memorial Museum - Research page: An overview of the digital and library resources of the US Holocaust museum.
  • The World Memory Project: a joint venture between the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Ancestry.com, now has more than one million records online.
  • Yad Vashem Pages of Testimony: Search for family names and possible relatives lost in the holocaust.
  • Cyndi's List: A categorized & cross-referenced index to genealogical resources on the Internet.
  • US GenWeb Project: A group of volunteers working together to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States.
  • Family Genealogy and History Internet Education Directory

  • Latvian Holocaust Victims: The purpose of the Latvia Holocaust Jewish Names Project is to recover the names and identities of these members of the Latvian Jewish Community who perished and to ensure that their memory is preserved.
  • The All Israeli Database: The free databases are divided into 3 eras: Ottoman Administration (- 1917), British Administration (1917-1948), Israeli Administration (1948- )
  • Genealogy InTIme search engine. Search their records for free.
  • Czestochowa-Radomsko Area Research Group finds, translates, and types Holocaust survivor lists and death lists from around Poland.
  • New York State death indices from 1957 to 1962. 
  • Wikipedia list of online newspaper archives: List of free and for fee archives from all over the world.

  • Mapywig : Their site contains a large collection of topographical maps owned by WIG - from Poland and neighboring countries (Lithuania, Germany, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia) between the two world wars. They also display many other scanned maps, not owned by WIG, from Austria-Hungary, Russia and the Soviet Union, Germany, and other parts of central Europe, from the early 19th century onwards.
  • Atlas of Historical County Boundaries: Historical U.S. boundaries for every state.

  • The New Jersey Archives: Sending for Genealogical Records: This is an informational page for anyone who wants to send to the New Jersey Archives for vital records. You do not have to be a direct relative, but you do have to know relevant dates.

  • The Joint Distribution Committee
  • International Tracing Service archives: Detailed records kept by the Nazis were taken to the German town of Bad Arolsen in Germany. This link is to the on-line search. To see a news video about Bad Arolsen, click on WorldNewsNBC.
  • The Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center: A national clearinghouse for persons seeking the fates of loved ones missing since the Holocaust and its aftermath.
  • Library of Congress Video: C-SPAN's original feature documentary, The Library of Congress, is a behind-the-scenes look at the national repository, providing the history of the institution, a tour of its iconic Jefferson Building, and glimpses of some of the library's rare book, photo, and map collections. 1 hour, 31 minutes.
  • The David Simonsen Archives: Chief Rabbi and Professor David Simonsen (1853-1932) was for more than six decades a central figure in Jewish Copenhagen Hs private library was aquired by The Royal Library in 1932, and the app. 25.000 volumes of Judaica and Hebraica were catalogued. Use Google translate to read the site.

  • Bibliography of North American Jewish Community Books: A listing of over 800 books about Jewish life in North American communities that are at Salt Lake City or can be requested on inter-library loan.
  • YIVO Archives: On line guide to the YIVO archives, a collection pertaining to Jewish life around the world, focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, with some documents dating from the 14th through 18th centuries.

  • Generous Genealogists: Genealogists willing to do free research or assist other genealogists. This is a nice replacement for Genealogical Random Acts of Kindness.

Foreign Language Searching

  • Ukrainian language site: A list of 91,000+ individuals, Jews & non-Jews, born from throughout the USSR & elsewhere, who were victims of repression
  • Database of Russian Army Jewish Soldiers: Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). Organized by province,city/town/village/district, and surname.
